  1. Research ‘Semiotics’. You can use the Olin library databases to read about the theories of Peirce, Saussure and Barthes OR watch my rather boring ppt below OR this more fun video (he does a good job – except he doesn’t mention Roland Barthes, dates etc): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JtJu9HdQVM

  2. Create a GRID-based info-graphic in Indesign, (remind yourselves by re-watching the Grid ppt) that is a quick cheat-sheet guide to the Theory of Semiotics done in a creative visual way. (remind yourself how to use grids and guides in Indesign- try to experiment with the things you learned in the Indesign videos and tutorials)  Examples below- but make it your own. You will be graded on creativity- so try to get the full 40 points by following all these directions, and doing it in a cool way! You get to decide how much information to include but always proof read- notice how the 3rd example has mispelled their names! Upload a ***  Packaged zip file *** of the project to Onedrive – 40 points

    Semiotics are important to logo design because logos are meant to communicate a brand. Different uses of symbolism and representation will help someone to understand what the brand is about more quickly and effectively. Certain elements have certain visual symbolism. For example, classical elements may remind a viewer that the logo represents a company of stability and order.

    Semiotics are important to logo decision because semiotics are how people interpret a sign, or symbol in the logo. The interpretations of different symbols can change the way that people understand what the brand is trying to communicate. it is important for companies to understand what semiotics might be attached to there symbol or logo and make sure they are communicating what they want to communicate.

    Semiotics are important in the role of producing logos because logos are made of symbols. These symbols are semiotics that represents the company for which they stand. These symbols are chosen specifically because they are able to be communicate a brand by using symbols that are easily identifiable and interpretably by the viewers and consumers.

    Semiotics are important in logo making because semiotics are integrated into our language and are a means of communication. symbols convey a lot of meaning without words which is basically what you’re doing when one creates a logo. symbols are the most simplistic and readable means of communication across all languages so when coming up with a logo incorporating symbols you must be aware of the message your sending to the viewer.

    Semiotics seem to be very important in all types of logos because they are the branch between the idea and the connection to the audience in the most simplistic form. They are made out of symbols not words giving it more of an artistic feel. The business or company wants to show their brand without words using some type of logo. Semiotics help clear the eye of the business of words.

    Semiotics are important to logo design because they communicate a message to the viewer through interpreted imagery. Semiotics are how people interpret an image, which leads to a cultural understanding of the logo. Logos make a brand easily identifiable through a simple image.

    There are a lot of different theories behind semiotics between Saussure, Pierce, and Barths, but ultimately they each say that signs represent a meaning greater than themselves- greater than what is put on the page. This is true for logos, as well, because they will start to be associated with the feeling, services, and products the company or organization provides once it is around for a while. For example, the logos will naturally connote a certain feeling. The designer must be aware of this to be sure they are portraying the proper nature of the company. Indexes and icons can specifically guide viewers to think of a certain product since neither of these signs are arbitrary, according to Pierce. Logos may be stronger if they are indexes or icons versus just symbols. The Dropbox logo, for example, is a strong icon.

    Understanding semiotics is important for logo design because it is the study of signs. More specifically, it is the study of how people interpret signs. Logos, and the production of them, is basically a language of its own and learning the techniques behind the whole process is extremely useful for receiving and communicating ideas. There are so many different types of logos but the basic purpose is to represent a company or product through symbol. Every unique design is meant to effectively express a vision that is directly associated with a business and allows for easy identification. The two concepts, semiotics and logos, are fully intertwined and develop each other further as the medium itself continues to expand.
