The Cornell Fine Arts Museum and The Department of Art and Art History at Rollins College cordially invite you to the 2019 Senior Exhibition “Cease and Desist”. Featured are works by seniors Meredith Ewen, Anastasia Rooke, Alicia Sales, Ari Schubot, Elizabeth Shugart, and Zinnia Upson.

This weeks homework delves even more into color with some fun readings and activities:

- EQUAL VALUE / INVISIBLE PAINTING in sketchbook, instructions below:
- PREPARE YOUR SURFACE: On a 12″ square in your sketchpad create a 1″ border along the parameter and then, in light pencil, draw a 5×5 grid consisting of 2″ squares.
- DESIGN: Within the drawn grid, design a pattern or composition using a ruler, compass and/or stencils. Consider simply dividing and subdividing squares of the grid. Your composition may be as simple as the original squares.
- VALUE: choose a single value for your design by looking at a grayscale. If you normally tend to work in high key (lighter end of grayscale), middle key (middle gray values of the grayscale) or low key (darker end of grayscale) it is best to choose a different value for this exercise. The object of the homework is to create a simple, yet interesting, design that is composed of at least 10 colors that are all the same value.
You can vary your palette with different hues and variations of hues and you can alter the chroma (saturation) of them as long as you maintain a single value for this design. Adding black (shade) and white (tint) will be necessary to generate your targeted value. Use acrylic paint.
The idea is that you produce an outcome that could be photographed in black and white, or scanned into a computer in grayscale, and it would appear somewhat invisible.
